New York City Department of Buildings Approved Courses – Cranes & Derricks

CLASS REQUIREMENTS:  To enroll in a New York City Department of Buildings Approved Course, you must be an active member of the New York City District Council of Carpenters with a UBC Identification Number.  This course is open to all NYCDCC Journey Level Members or NYCDCC Apprentices that are 2nd Year and higher.

16-Hour Rigging Worker

Eligible Candidates:  This course is available to the members of the New York City District Council of Carpenters Union.

Purpose of Course:  This course is a requirement for an individual – who is not employed by a licensed rigger – to perform rigging or signaling work in conjunction with the hoisting or lowering of articles on the outside of a building with hoisting equipment. In lieu of completing this course, an individual may instead possess a department approved national rigging certification.

NYC Requirement:  To perform rigging or signaling work in conjunction with the hoisting or lowering of articles on the outside of a building with hoisting equipment, an individual must either (i) complete this course, (ii) possess a department approved national rigging certification, or (iii) be employed by a licensed rigger.

8-Hour Rigging Worker Refresher

Eligible Candidates:  This course is available to the members of the New York City District Council of Carpenters Union.

Purpose of Course:  This course is a requirement for an individual – who is not employed by a licensed rigger – to continue to perform rigging or signaling work in conjunction with the hoisting or lowering of articles on the outside of a building with hoisting equipment. In lieu of completing this course, an individual may instead possess a department approved national rigging certification.

NYC Requirement:  To continue to perform rigging or signaling work in conjunction with the hoisting or lowering of articles on the outside of a building with hoisting equipment, an individual must either (i) complete this course four years following the completion of the 16-Hour Rigger Worker course & every four years thereafter, or (ii) possess a department approved national rigging certification, or (iii) be employed by a licensed rigger.

32-Hour Rigging Supervisor

Eligible Candidates:  This course is available to the members of the New York City District Council of Carpenters Union.

Purpose of Course:  This course is a requirement for an individual – who is not a licensed rigger or a designated foreman of a licensed rigger – to supervise the hoisting or lowering of articles on the outside of a building with hoisting equipment. In lieu of completing this course, an individual may instead possess a department approved national rigging certification.

NYC Requirement:  To supervise the hoisting or lowering of articles on the outside of a building with hoisting equipment – and a licensed rigger or designated rigging foreman is not required for such work – an individual must either (i) complete this course or (ii) possess a department approved national rigging certification.

16-Hour Rigging Supervisor Refresher

Eligible Candidates:  This course is available to the members of the New York City District Council of Carpenters Union.

Purpose of Course:  This course is a requirement for an individual – who is not a licensed rigger or a designated foreman of a licensed rigger – to maintain his/her designation to supervise the hoisting or lowering of articles on the outside of a building with hoisting equipment. In lieu of completing this course, an individual may instead possess a department approved national rigging certification.

NYC Requirement:  To continue to supervise the hoisting or lowering of articles on the outside of a building with hoisting equipment – and a licensed rigger or designated rigging foreman is not required for such work – an individual must either (i) complete this refresher training course every four years following the completion of the 32- Hour Rigging Supervisor course & every four years thereafter, or (ii) possess a department approved national rigging certification.

30-Hour Special Rigger

Eligible Candidates:  This course is available to the members of the New York City District Council of Carpenters Union.

Purpose of Course:  This course is a Licensing requirement for applicants for a Special Rigger license.

NYC Requirement:  To apply for a New York City Special Rigger license, all applicants must successfully complete 30 hours of training.
